The OCDSB is hosting LAUNCH 2020 for students to have an online experience which involves presenters from multiple pathways guiding you through your journey. If you are feeling lost or unsure about your future, this event will give you an insight of different pathways like joining the workforce, engaging in an apprenticeship, going to college, travelling, enrolling in a gap year program, or going to university. We want everyone to know that all options are a first choice; your decision is important and valued. LAUNCH 2020 will also help you gather information on what is available, as well as hear about different opportunities and learning experiences from current students, employers, and apprentices.
You Be You: What is Unconscious Bias?
We all make quick assessments of others without even realizing it. We are not born with bias. Biases are formed by past situations, experiences, background and culture. Unconscious biases typically exist towards gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability (both physical and mental), and weight. Most of us will say “I see people for who they are” but do we? Unconscious biases affect and impact decision making both professionally and personally with real impact. Having these biases can affect the future path you’re on. Recognizing, managing and mitigating unconscious bias, particularly gender bias amongst young girls and teens, promotes diversity and inclusion. Diversity defines who is on the team. Inclusion defines who gets to play. Let’s all play together!
